Pain Management

At least one third of patients under cancer treatment experience pain, and each person must be evaluated as everyone does not experience pain in the same manner. A key part of our assessment is to consider pain as the fifth vital sign and pain management must be carefully designed.

There remains a great deal of stigma applied to pain and pain medications. We want to dispel those beliefs to improve quality of life. Common issues to overcome are: pain is “normal,” pain management causes addiction and that physicians might stop the treatment if pain is reported by the patient. Our pain management team will work with our physicians to define proactive, patient focused care to maintain optimum quality of life to produce better patient outcomes.
