NASHVILLE, Tenn. (July 30, 2013) – Sarah Cannon Cancer Center at TriStar Centennial Medical Center has received a Three-Year/Full Accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons, for providing the highest quality breast care possible. Receiving care at a NAPBC-accredited center ensures that patients have access to:
- Comprehensive care, including a full range of state-of-the-art services
- A multidisciplinary team approach to coordinate the best treatment options
- Information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options
- Quality breast care close to home
“This accreditation is a testament to our dedication and commitment to offer patients every advantage in their battle against breast disease” said Patti Moser, administrator for Sarah Cannon Cancer Center. “We are honored to be recognized by the NAPBC and believe this accreditation is a strong foundation by which we will continue to build out our offering as a breast center of excellence.” During the accreditation process, Sarah Cannon Cancer Center at TriStar Centennial demonstrated compliance with standards established by the NAPBC for women who are diagnosed with the full spectrum of breast disease. The standards require centers to be proficient in center leadership, clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education, and quality improvement.
According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), breast cancer is currently the second leading cause of cancer death in women and it is estimated that 232,340 new patients will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in the United States in 2013. In addition, hundreds of thousands of women who will deal with benign breast disease this year will require medical evaluation for treatment options.
“We believe that early detection and a comprehensive approach is our best defense in treating this disease. Sarah Cannon is committed to a fully integrated approach to cancer care, forming centers of excellence to bring together the essential components of clinical quality,” said Richard J. Geer, M.D., Physician-in-Chief, Surgical Oncology for Sarah Cannon.
Sarah Cannon holds regular multi-disciplinary tumor conferences which allow the entire care team to come together and determine a breast patient’s comprehensive treatment plan. This team includes radiation oncologists, surgical oncologists, medical oncologists with research, pathologists, radiologists, plastic surgeons and other specialists as required.
The NAPBC is an association of professional organizations dedicated to achieving top quality care and monitoring of outcomes of patients with diseases of the breast. This mission is pursued through standard-setting, scientific validation, and patient and professional education. Its board membership includes professionals from 20 national organizations that reflect the full spectrum of breast care.
