Roger's Cancer Journey

Roger, a 55-year-old husband and father, is seemingly a jack-of-all trades. His mission is to enjoy life by “creating and doing things that make [his] little world more interesting.” This includes coaching his children’s sports teams, leading 4-H, tending to his garden and orchard, raising chickens, being a self-taught master on the grill, woodworking and so much more! Roger is a busy man.

This life mission was challenged when Roger began experiencing back pain. To try and relieve the pain, Roger used a combination of over the counter medication and chiropractic therapy. Unfortunately, over time, the pain continued to increase to the point where he could not sit upright.

“The pain was unbearable. I was barely able to get through the work day and I was spending most of the evening propped up in bed as that was the only way to ease the pain in my hip and legs.”

Roger went to the emergency room in his hometown of Great Bend, KS where they performed a CT scan and found “lytic lesions”, a hallmark sign of Multiple Myeloma. He was then transferred to the Sarah Transplant & Cellular Therapy Program at Research Medical Center in Kansas, City MO where received his first chemotherapy treatment. Roger also later received an autologous stem cell transplant. Roger had his +100 day work up in Jan. 2022 which revealed he is in very good partial remission. He is currently screening for one of the clinical trials offered by Sarah Cannon Research Institute.

“The staff at the Sarah Cannon Transplant & Cellular Therapy Program at Research Medical Center are awesome. Their level of experience and expertise to me, is unparalleled. I am now able to do many things again that were simply out of the question before my diagnosis.”
